Year 2 Line and Shape Art Lessons: Daisy Garden

Busy bees, cheerful daisies and a garden growing one shape at a time! These Year 2 Line and Shape Art Lessons bring nature into the art room through playful explorations of organic circles, overlapping shapes and symmetry.

Year 2 Line & Shape Art Lessons featuring daisy garden

A daisy garden gives young artists plenty to notice: rounded centres, petals spreading outwards and little bees among the flowers. Familiar subjects make it easier to see how simple shapes can work together to create a fuller picture.

These Year 2 Line and Shape Art Lessons help students turn those observations into creative choices. As their gardens take shape, they explore how forms overlap, how patterns repeat and how different parts of an artwork relate to one another. The learning has a clear purpose, with room for each garden to grow differently.

A Little Buzz in the Art Room

Daisies and bees offer an inviting way to explore organic shapes. Students discover that a circle can have a softer, less regular edge and still be recognisable. Repeated petals and rounded forms help them build pictures from manageable parts, developing confidence as they see their ideas come together.

Fold-and-paint symmetry adds a moment of discovery: open the paper and see what appears! Digital Colour Drop offers another way to explore colour within shapes. Across the activities, students return to connected ideas while experimenting with different processes and materials.

Short weekly Core Skills mini-lessons support the ongoing Studio Work. Everyone continues learning new skills, while students have time to make choices and develop their projects at their own pace. The garden theme ties those experiences together through subjects that young artists can recognise and enjoy.

Meet the Artists Behind the Garden

Annie Troe and Charley Harper show students different ways to turn nature into art. Troe’s Little Buzz – Bees and Daisies brings a cheerful starting point for exploring repeated natural forms. Students can look closely at the flowers and bees, noticing how familiar shapes become part of a decorative composition.

Harper’s Once There Was a Field offers another way of looking, using simplified shapes to represent the natural world. Comparing the two artworks helps students see that a picture does not need every tiny detail to communicate what it shows. This gives young artists permission to simplify, experiment and make choices in their own garden-inspired work.

Where This Sits in the CampFire Pathway

This Year 2 unit is one of eleven year-level units in CampFire, the Drawing Toolkit’s Line and Shape collection spanning Foundation to Year 10. Year 2 extends early work with circles and repeated shapes into organic forms, overlap and symmetry, helping students consider how the parts of a composition work together.

Each unit has its own artists, activities and level of challenge, with a consistent structure of short weekly Core Skills mini-lessons, hands-on and digital Studio Work, quizzes and reflection. Daisy Garden can be taught as a standalone ten-week journey or alongside other CampFire year levels across a school. Read more about the full CampFire Line and Shape pathway.

Who Are These Year 2 Line and Shape Art Lessons For?

This unit is for Year 2 classroom teachers wanting a structured, ready-to-teach art sequence and Visual Arts specialists building progression across the early primary years. Familiar garden subjects and manageable steps help students approach new techniques with confidence while developing their own ideas.

The unit includes ready-to-teach lesson slides, a Teacher Guide with the Unit Planner and Australian Curriculum v9 planning support, a Quiz Book with answers, and a Posters Pack with Drawing Tools and Reflection Guides. The planning supports a connected term of art while leaving room for your teaching choices and your students’ creativity.
