Foundation Line and Shape Art Lessons: Teddy Bears

A big circle, a little circle, two round ears, and suddenly, there’s Teddy! These Foundation Line and Shape Art Lessons turn early drawing practice into a playful exploration of teddy bears, colourful circles and pattern.

Foundation Line & Shape Art Lessons featuring teddy bears

Foundation students bring enormous enthusiasm to art. Their ideas are often bigger than their developing pencil control, and a friendly starting point can make all the difference. These Foundation Line and Shape Art Lessons are designed specifically for Foundation, with Australian Curriculum v9 planning support. Familiar objects, recognisable shapes and manageable steps help young artists get started.

The learning begins with the circle. Students trace, nest, overlap and repeat circles, discovering how a simple shape can become a pattern, or a teddy bear with a personality of its own. Drawing, painting, clay and digital activities give little hands different ways to explore the same ideas and build confidence.

Big Bear, Little Bear, Circles Everywhere

Big, medium and small become more memorable when Daddy Bear, Mummy Bear and Baby Bear join the lesson. Goldilocks makes an appearance too! Students explore circles inside circles, shapes beside one another and shapes that overlap. As they arrange these familiar forms, they begin to see how size and placement change a picture.

Tracing offers a successful starting point. A lid or cup gives students something steady to follow while they practise pencil control and decide where their shapes will go. There is room for colourful tummies, round ears and cheerful bear faces. The shared shapes give students a starting point, with plenty of space for their own choices.

The teddy-bear theme continues through clay, painting and digital drawing. A circle drawn on paper becomes a rounded form to model, painted shapes invite colour choices, and an iPad offers another way to draw and fill circles. Students carry familiar ideas into each new activity, discovering what different materials can do. Short Core Skills mini-lessons keep the class learning together while Studio Work gives students time to develop their projects at their own pace.

Meet the Artists Behind the Circles

Teddy has some colourful company: Wassily Kandinsky and Sonia Delaunay. Kandinsky’s Color Study, Squares with Concentric Circles gives students an inviting starting point for looking closely. They can spot circles inside circles, notice colour choices and discuss how the shapes are arranged.

Sonia Delaunay’s Fabric Design introduces another way to use circular shapes and repeating patterns. Students discover that art can become part of the fabric and clothing around us. The comparison is simple enough for young learners to explore: two artists, familiar shapes and different creative choices. These connections give the teddy-bear activities a clear learning purpose, helping students notice and use line, shape and colour in their own work.

Where This Sits in the CampFire Pathway

This Foundation unit is the starting point of CampFire, the Drawing Toolkit’s Line and Shape collection spanning Foundation to Year 10. Each of its eleven year-level units has its own artists, activities and level of challenge. All share a consistent structure of short Core Skills mini-lessons, hands-on and digital Studio Work, quizzes and reflection.

Foundation begins with tracing, recognising and arranging circles. These early experiences support the increasingly independent drawing explored in later year levels. Each CampFire unit can also be taught as a standalone ten-week journey. Read more about the full CampFire Line and Shape pathway.

Who Are These Foundation Line and Shape Art Lessons For?

This unit is for Foundation classroom teachers who want a clear, playful art sequence and Visual Arts specialists looking for progression across year levels. Visual instructions, familiar objects and repeated opportunities to practise and support students as they develop confidence. Early Procreate activities begin with finger drawing and introduce Colour Drop through simple circle compositions.

The unit includes ready-to-teach lesson slides, a Teacher Guide with the Unit Planner and Australian Curriculum v9 planning support, a Quiz Book with answers, and a Posters Pack with Drawing Tools and Reflection Guides. The planning gives you a clear starting point, with flexibility for your classroom and your students.

Bring Teddy into the art room and see what your youngest artists can make with a circle.
