Year 4 Line and Shape Art Lessons: Hot Air Balloons
Flowing shapes, bold colours and a hot air balloon ready for adventure! These Year 4 Line and Shape Art Lessons invite students to turn curving lines and organic forms into balanced, imaginative artworks.

These Year 4 Line and Shape art lessons introduce organic, free-A shape can twist, stretch or curve and still find its place in a picture. Inspired by Rex Ray and Henri Matisse, students explore how free-flowing forms can work together through mirroring, repetition and thoughtful arrangement. Colour adds another layer of possibility, helping shapes stand out or connect across a composition.
These Year 4 Line and Shape Art Lessons build on students’ earlier shape explorations while encouraging more deliberate planning. Through drawing, printmaking, clay, painting and digital art-making, students discover how a little structure can help even the wiggliest shapes feel balanced.
Organic Shapes Take Flight
The Hot Air Balloon Journey painting project gives students a playful setting for their organic shapes. A balloon becomes a colourful feature above a painted landscape, bringing together flowing forms and thoughtful colour choices. Students consider how the shapes within their balloon work together to create a balanced design.
The same ideas take different forms throughout the unit, from hand and leaf prints to a clay plate decorated with organic shapes. Digital activities explore overlapping forms, colour and soft shadows, helping students discover how shapes can appear to sit in front of or behind one another. Each medium offers a fresh way to investigate the relationship between line, shape and composition.
Meet the Artists Behind the Shapes
Rex Ray’s Collage 4323 introduces students to bold colour and flowing organic forms. Looking closely at how shapes are arranged encourages them to notice the planning within a lively composition. They explore how curved forms can feel playful while still working together as a whole.
Henri Matisse’s The Sheaf offers a contrasting approach through cut-paper, leaf-like forms. Students compare the artists’ use of shape, colour and arrangement, then take those ideas into their own art-making. The artists provide inspiration, while students make choices about the colours and forms that give their work its own character.
