Three Different Lessons. Three Different Year Levels.

I’ve put together three FREE Line and Shape art lessons from Love To Teach Art, giving you a little taste of how the lessons work in real classrooms.

Foundation: The Three Bears

Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky, this playful lesson begins with Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Students explore big, medium and small circles, tracing and arranging them to create their own teddy bear drawings. It’s a gentle introduction to line, shape, size and pencil control, with plenty of room for individual expression. Explore how Wassily Kandinsky used colour and repeated circles in his artwork Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles (1913).

Year 4: Rex Ray’s Invisible Map

Students begin with a circle and a simple folded grid, then explore how flowing organic shapes can fit together within a composition. Inspired by artist Rex Ray, this lesson encourages students to experiment with shape, placement, balance and colour while developing their own designs. Discover more of Rex Ray’s colourful collages and see how he combined flowing organic shapes to create playful compositions.

Year 9: Neon Glow Miró-Style Eyes

Inspired by Joan Miró, students explore unusual eye shapes, expressive lines and imaginative colour combinations. Using Procreate on an iPad, they experiment with digital effects to create glowing eyes against dark backgrounds. It’s an engaging way to introduce digital art-making while strengthening students’ understanding of line, shape and composition. Explore Joan Miró’s The Gold of the Azure (1967) to see how expressive lines, imaginative shapes and bold colours come together in his artwork.

A Little Taste of Love To Teach Art

These three mini-lessons are examples from a much larger connected teaching pathway. Love To Teach Art’s Line and Shape series includes eleven individual ten-week units, from Foundation to Year 10. Each year-level unit combines short weekly Core Skills lessons with artist learning, hands-on and digital Studio Work, quizzes and reflection.

The idea is simple: Teach the concept. Keep your creativity. The planning and lesson sequence are already prepared, but you still have the freedom to adapt the teaching, materials and activities to suit your students. You can begin with just one year level, or explore how the learning develops across several year levels.
